Early Life

Born on 21 September 1980 in Mumbai, Kareena Kapoor, often informally called ‘Bebo,’ is the younger daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita. Her elder sister, Karisma, is also an actress. She comes from a prominent Bollywood family, with her paternal grandfather being actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor and maternal grandfather being actor Hari Shivdasani. She also has connections to the legendary Prithviraj Kapoor through her great-grandfather. Her uncle was the well-known actor Rishi Kapoor, and her cousin is the popular actor Ranbir Kapoor.

Kareena’s name was inspired by the book Anna Karenina, which her mother read during pregnancy. She is of Punjabi Hindu descent from her father’s side and of Sindhi Hindu and British descent from her mother’s side.

As a child, Kareena was naughty and spoiled, fascinated by films from an early age. Actresses like Nargis and Meena Kumari were significant influences on her. Despite her family’s film background, her father initially disapproved of women entering the film industry due to traditional beliefs. This led to her parents’ separation, although they later reconciled.

Kareena attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai and later Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun. While she wasn’t initially inclined towards academics, she eventually returned to Mumbai, studied commerce at Mithibai College, and even took a summer course in microcomputers at Harvard. Despite enrolling at the Government Law College, Mumbai, and developing an interest in law, she decided to pursue acting, training at an institute in Mumbai..

Career

Coming from a family deeply rooted in Indian cinema, Kareena has a significant connection to legendary figures like Raj Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor. Despite her family’s film background, Kareena faced challenges due to traditional beliefs about women in cinema. However, her passion for acting led her to train at an institute in Mumbai under Kishore Namit Kapoor.

In the early 2000s, Kareena’s journey in Bollywood began with the film “Refugee” alongside Abhishek Bachchan, Suniel Shetty, Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff & Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

Her breakthrough came with Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…” in 2001, where she portrayed the character Pooja. She starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukerji, Jaya Bachchan, Aryan Khan, Malvika Raaj & Johnny Lever.

She continued to diversify her roles, starring in Mani Ratnam’s “Yuva” and Govind Nihalani’s critically acclaimed film “Dev.” Despite limited screen time in “Yuva,” Kapoor’s enigmatic portrayal garnered positive reviews.

In 2004, Kapoor took on a villainous role in the thriller “Fida,” showcasing her versatility. She also starred in “Aitraaz,” playing a crucial role in the courtroom sequence. Additionally, “Hulchul” marked her first commercial success in three years. However, “Bewafaa” received criticism, with Kapoor portrayed as embodying a more mature character.

Her releases in 2005, including “Kyon Ki” and “Dosti: Friends Forever,” underperformed at the box office. In 2006, she appeared in “36 China Town” and “Chup Chup Ke” alongside Shahid Kapoor, with the former being a commercial success.

Renowned filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, impressed by Kapoor’s performance in “Yuva,” cast her in “Omkara,” an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. Kapoor portrayed Desdemona, and her nuanced portrayal earned her accolades, including a fourth Filmfare and her first Screen Award. “Omkara” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006.

In 2007, Kareena Kapoor collaborated with Shahid Kapoor for the fourth time in the romantic comedy “Jab We Met.” In 2008, Kapoor appeared in Vijay Krishna Acharya’s “Tashan,” where she met her future husband, actor Saif Ali Khan. The year 2009 saw Kapoor in Sabbir Khan’s “Kambakkht Ishq,” playing a surgeon and part-time model. Although the film received poor reviews, it performed well economically. Kapoor followed with “Main Aurr Mrs Khanna” and “Kurbaan” in the same year. The latter, where she portrayed a woman confined after discovering her husband’s terrorism involvement, earned her a fourth Filmfare Best Actress nomination.

Her second Filmfare nomination in 2009 was for “3 Idiots,” directed by Rajkumar Hirani, co-starring Aamir Khan. The film became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of its time and received critical acclaim. Kapoor’s role as Pia, a medical student, earned her the IIFA Award for Best Actress.

Entering the new decade with “Milenge Milenge” in 2010, Kapoor faced criticism for the outdated film with stereotypical characters. However, her supporting role in “We Are Family,” an adaptation of “Stepmom,” brought acclaim, winning her the Best Supporting Actress at the 56th Filmfare Awards.

Kapoor continued her successful streak with “Golmaal 3” in 2010 and “Bodyguard” in 2011. “Bodyguard” became India’s highest-earning film of the year, despite mixed critical reviews. She followed with the sci-fi film “Ra.One,” which faced media scrutiny but emerged as a major commercial success.

In 2012, Kapoor married Saif Ali Khan, and they welcomed their sons in 2016 and 2021. Her last release in 2012 was “Talaash: The Answer Lies Within,” where she played the role of a prostitute named Rosie.
