Career
Jaya Bachchan, known for her versatile acting, started her career at a young age of 15 in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film “Mahanagar” in 1963. Following this, she appeared in two more Bengali films. Inspired by Ray’s guidance, she enrolled in the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, where she graduated with top honors.
Her breakthrough came with Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Guddi” in 1971, where she played a school-girl infatuated with a film star. This role established her as the girl-next-door in Bollywood. Despite dabbling in glamorous and negative roles, she found her niche in portraying middle-class sensibilities in films by directors like Gulzar, Basu Chatterjee, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
In Gulzar’s “Koshish” in 1973, she portrayed a deaf character, marking a significant milestone in her career and inspiring her to engage in social work. Her pairing with Amitabh Bachchan began with “Bansi Birju” and “Ek Nazar” in 1972, followed by the blockbuster “Zanjeer” in 1973, which propelled Amitabh to stardom.
After the birth of her daughter Shweta during the filming of “Sholay,” Jaya took a hiatus from acting to focus on her family. She made an exception for “Silsila” in 1981. In the late 1980s, she ventured into writing, contributing the story for “Shahenshah” starring her husband.
She made a remarkable comeback in 1998 with “Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa,” a film addressing the Naxalite movement. Her performance earned critical acclaim and a Filmfare Special Award. Subsequently, she delivered noteworthy performances in films like “Fiza” (2000), “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…” (2001), and “Kal Ho Naa Ho” (2003).
Her collaborations extended to working with her son Abhishek in “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag” (2007) and “Drona” (2008). She also ventured into international cinema with the Bangladeshi film “Meherjaan” (2011).
In 2023, she starred in Karan Johar’s “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” delivering a standout performance alongside Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi. Her portrayal earned her a fourth nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
