Career
After graduating from the National School of Drama in 1987, Irrfan Khan began his acting career with minor roles in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” and a teleplay on Doordarshan called “Laal Ghaas Par Neele Ghode.” He also portrayed a psycho killer in the serial “Darr” and played Makhdoom Mohiuddin in “Kahkashan.”
Throughout the 1990s, Khan appeared in numerous television serials, including “Chanakya,” “Bharat Ek Khoj,” “Chandrakanta,” and “The Great Maratha.” He also played a double role in the supernatural fantasy drama “Chandrakanta.”
In 1989, he starred opposite Roopa Ganguly in Basu Chatterjee’s drama film “Kamla Ki Maut.” He continued to work in films like “Ek Doctor Ki Maut” in 1990 and “Such a Long Journey” in 1998. In 1998, Khan portrayed Valmiki in Sanjay Khan’s serial “Jai Hanuman.” He also appeared in the horror television show “Ssshhhh…Koi Hai” in 2001.
In 2001, he starred in Asif Kapadia’s historical film “The Warrior,” which garnered attention at international film festivals. He also acted in Ashvin Kumar’s short film “Road to Ladakh.” Khan’s breakthrough in Bollywood came with the critically acclaimed film “Maqbool” in 2003, where he played the title role based on Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”
His first Bollywood lead role was in the 2005 film “Rog,” followed by acclaimed performances in movies like “Haasil” and “Life in a… Metro.” In 2008, Khan gained international recognition for his role as a police inspector in “Slumdog Millionaire,” which won several awards including the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
He continued to work in both Indian and international cinema, starring in films like “The Namesake,” “A Mighty Heart,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Life of Pi,” and “The Lunchbox.”
Khan’s performance in “Paan Singh Tomar” earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2012. He also appeared in successful films like “Piku,” “Talvar,” and “Hindi Medium.” In 2020, Khan’s final film appearance was in “Angrezi Medium,” directed by Homi Adajania.
