Career

In 2007, Freida Pinto was selected by her modeling agency to audition for the lead role in Danny Boyle’s film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). After six months of rigorous auditions, she secured the role of Latika, the love interest of the main character Jamal, played by Dev Patel. During post-production, she attended an acting course to refine her skills. The film received widespread acclaim and won numerous awards, including eight Oscars.

Following the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto ventured into art house productions. In 2010, she appeared in Woody Allen’s comedy-drama You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, alongside Antonio Banderas and Naomi Watts. The same year, she starred in Julian Schnabel’s Miral, portraying an orphaned Palestinian woman. Although the films received mixed reviews, Pinto’s performances were praised.

In 2011, Pinto appeared in four films. She played Caroline Aranha in the science fiction film Rise of the Planet of the Apes, followed by the title role in Michael Winterbottom’s Trishna, based on Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles. She also portrayed Princess Lailah in the independent film Day of the Falcon and the oracle priestess Phaedra in the fantasy-action film Immortals.

After a two-year hiatus from film releases, Pinto appeared in the music video for Bruno Mars’ single “Gorilla” in 2013 and served as a narrator for the documentary Girl Rising. Her cinematic comeback came with the biographical drama Desert Dancer (2014), where she played Elaheh, a heroin-addicted woman. In 2015, she starred in Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups and the action film Blunt Force Trauma.

In 2021, it was announced that Pinto would portray the lead role in a biopic of SOE agent Noor Inayat Khan, based on the book Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan by Shrabani Basu. Additionally, her production company, Freebird Films, secured a first look TV deal at Entertainment One.
