Masterson began her career as a dancer but transitioned into acting at age 11 after landing a role in The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking. Initially auditioning for the lead role, she was cast as the Head Girl instead. Since then, she has appeared in over twenty-five films and thirty-five television productions.

Her early television roles include guest appearances on Jupiter Moon (1990, 1996), Casualty (1993), Game On (1996), and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (1991).
