Career

Ekta Kapoor began her career at the age of 17 by interning with advertisement and feature filmmaker Kailash Surendranath. With financing from her father, she started producing under her banner Balaji Telefilms. However, her initial projects faced setbacks, with six pilot episodes rejected, resulting in significant losses.

In 1995, Kapoor found success with her sitcom “Hum Paanch.” This marked a turning point in her career. In the 2000s, Kapoor adopted the letter ‘K’ as her lucky alphabet and launched several successful shows with titles starting with ‘K’, such as “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” and “Kasautii Zindagii Kay.” By 2001, she was producing over 30 hours of television shows per week, dominating popular TV channels.

Kapoor expanded her horizons by venturing into regional languages, starting with the Tamil series “Kudumbum,” which she later dubbed into Telugu and Hindi as “Ghar Ek Mandir.” She continued her success in other languages as well.

She has created and produced more than 130 Indian soap operas, including popular shows like “Pavitra Rishta,” “Bade Acche Lagte Hain,” and “Naagin.” Her contributions to Indian television earned her the titles of “Czarina of television” and “the Queen of Indian Television.”

In 2001, Kapoor entered Bollywood movie production with “Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta.” Despite some initial success, many of her films did not perform well commercially or critically. In 2012, Kapoor launched the Institute of Creative Excellence, a media training school under Balaji Telefilms. She also ventured into digital content with her app ALTBalaji, launching several TV series online.
