She began her career in the 1940s, captivating audiences with her performances in Gujarat’s theatre scene. Her portrayal of the lead role in “Mena Gurjari” garnered widespread acclaim, making it one of the most beloved Bhavais. Notably, her performance in front of President Rajendra Prasad at Rashtrapati Bhawan in 1957 marked a historic moment for Gujarati theatre.

While she debuted in films with “Kariyawar” (1948), she quickly returned to theatre after just one movie. She continued to enthrall audiences with her roles in plays by the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and Shanti Bardhan’s Ballet troupe. Later, she founded her own theatre group called “Natmandal” in Ahmedabad, solidifying her legacy as a theatre activist.

In the mid-40s, she made a cinematic comeback with Basu Bhattacharya’s “Uski Kahani” (1966), winning the Bengal Journalists Association Award. Throughout the 1960s, she appeared in notable films like Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Satyakam” (1969) and Amitabh Bachchan’s debut film “Saat Hindustani” (1969). By the 1970s, she had become a respected figure in both art and commercial cinema, known for her powerful portrayals of motherly roles.

Her notable films from this era include Gulzar’s “Mausam” (1975), Basu Chatterjee’s “Chitchor” (1976), and Shyam Benegal’s “Bhumika” (1977). In the comedy classic “Gol Maal” (1979), she played a memorable role as Kamala Shrivastava.

The 1980s marked another peak in her career, with acclaimed performances in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Khoobsurat” (1980) and Bhavni Bhavai (1980). She received nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in these films. Additionally, she was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1980.

During the ’80s, she showcased her versatility by appearing in television series like “Malgudi Days” and films like “A Passage to India” (1984). Her performances in Ketan Mehta’s “Mirch Masala” (1985), Govind Nihalani’s “Tamas” (1986), and Gulzar’s “Ijaazat” (1987) were widely praised.
