Early Life
Daler Mehndi was born in Patna, Bihar, India, into a Sikh family. In 1991, he created his own group, including his brothers, cousins, and friends. Three years later, he received recognition by winning the Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest in 1994, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Career
Magnasound signed Daler Mehndi for a contract of three years, during which he released three albums. His first album, “Bolo Ta Ra Ra,” became a huge hit, selling over 20 million copies and making him a pop star. Daler won the Best Indian Male Pop Artist Award from Channel V for this album.
Following this success, Daler released his second album, “Dardi Rab Rab,” which surpassed the sales of his debut. He received nominations in three categories at the Channel V Music Awards and won the Best Indian Male Artist Award.
In 1997, Daler released his third album, “Balle Balle,” which earned him six Channel V Awards. This album, like his previous ones, went multi-platinum. The same year, he composed and performed the popular track “Na Na Na Re” for the Bollywood film Mrityudata, contributing to the film’s soundtrack album selling 1.5 million units in India.
In 1998, he released the iconic “Tunak Tunak Tun,” with a groundbreaking music video. The song became a massive success, both nationally and internationally, and the album won the Best Indian Pop Album at the 1998 Screen Awards.
In 2000, Daler released the album “Ek Dana” with TIPS Music, featuring a mix of folk, rock, and pop genres. One of the popular songs, “Sajan Mere Satrangiya,” featured Priyanka Chopra in the video. In 2001, he joined Universal Music and released the track “Kala Kauwa Kaat Khayega.”
Daler Mehndi ventured into playback singing for films in 2003, contributing songs like “Ru-Ba-Ru” and “Nach Le.” His diverse musical journey continued with albums like “Mojaan Laen Do” and the self-produced “Shaa Ra Ra” in 2004.
In 2014, Deadmau5 and Daler Mehndi collaborated to remix his 1998 hit “Tunak Tunak Tun.” During Navratri of the same year, Daler composed and recorded his rendition of the ‘Hanuman Chalisa.’
In September 2014, he released the song ‘Aaja Mere Twitter Te’ to engage with fans on social media. On 6 November 2014, Mehndi released his album ‘Best of Gurbani’ in honor of Guru Nanak Jayanti.
