Career
Fujitani began her acting career with her first television appearance in “Gamera: Guardian of the Universe” in 1995, where she played Asagi Kusanagi. She reprised the role in the sequel “Gamera 2: Attack of Legion” in 1996 and again in “Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris” in 1999.
In 2000, Fujitani wrote a coupled novella titled “Touhimu” (Flee-Dream) and “Yakeinu” (Burnt Dog), which she later co-adapted with Hideaki Anno into the film “Shiki-Jitsu.” This marked the first non-animated feature released by Studio Ghibli under the Studio Kajino label. She also starred in the lead role of the film.
Throughout her career, Fujitani has appeared in various films, including “Pyrokinesis” in 2000, “Sansa” in 2003, and “Man from Reno” in 2014. She has also ventured into writing, contributing essays and short stories to several national publications.
In 2014, Fujitani collaborated on an Ermenegildo Zegna-commissioned short film with Park Chan-wook, Chung Chung-hoon, and Michael Werwie, which Park directed. The film, titled “A Rose Reborn,” starred Jack Huston and Daniel Wu.
Aside from her acting and writing endeavors, Fujitani directed a short drama for TV Tokyo’s Drama Factory program in 2006. In her personal life, Fujitani married screenwriter Javier Gullón in 2016, and they have two daughters.
Her filmography also includes roles in various other films such as “Tokyo!” in 2008, “Daylight Savings” in 2012, “The Lion Standing in the Wind” in 2015, and “I Will Make You Mine” in 2020.
On television, she has appeared in series like “Ultraman Max” in 2005, “Atami no Sousakan” in 2010, and “The Last Ship” in 2016, where she had a recurring role in seven episodes. Additionally, she appeared in two episodes of “Mozart in the Jungle” in 2018.
