Career

Anuradha Paudwal began her music journey in 1973 with a Sanskrit verse in the Hindi film “Abhiman,” composed by S. D. Burman. She initially sang in various languages, including Marathi, Tamil, Odia, Nepali, Bengali, and Kannada.

In the early days of her career, before gaining widespread recognition, Paudwal sang in a radio program and worked as a dubbing artist. Despite singing a few popular songs in the 1970s, she did not achieve significant fame.

Her breakthrough came with the song “Tu Mera Janu Hai” alongside Manhar Udhas in the film “Hero.” Initially asked to dub the song for Lata Mangeshkar, Paudwal’s rendition impressed music directors Laxmikant-Pyarelal, leading to her inclusion as the playback singer. This marked the beginning of her success in the mid-80s.

During this period, Paudwal collaborated with Mohammed Aziz, and their duo gained immense popularity. She also worked with emerging music composers like Nadeem–Shravan, who composed several songs for her, including those in the film “Aashiqui.” The success of the film’s music solidified Paudwal’s position as a leading playback singer.

Subsequently, Paudwal’s voice graced many successful albums and films like “Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin” and “Sadak.” She became a preferred choice over other established singers of her time.

At the peak of her career, Paudwal signed an exclusive contract with T-Series. However, her dominance in Bollywood gradually declined with the emergence of new female playback singers like Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurti, and Sadhana Sargam.

Transitioning from Bollywood, Paudwal turned to devotional music at the request of Gulshan Kumar. Her devotional songs, particularly those dedicated to Maa Durga, gained immense popularity. She continued to release bhajans across various religious themes, including Hindu, Islamic, Christian, Jain, and Sikh devotional songs.

In 1997, after the murder of Gulshan Kumar, Paudwal resumed singing for other music labels like Tips Industries and Venus Records & Tapes. Despite receiving some popular songs, she faced stiff competition from singers like Alka Yagnik and didn’t regain her previous level of success.

Throughout her career, Paudwal collaborated with numerous male and female singers, including Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, and Alka Yagnik, among others. Despite working with notable musicians and establishing herself as a prominent singer, she bid farewell to Bollywood in 2006 after recording her last song, “Palkein Uthake Dekhiye,” for the film “Jaane Hoga Kya.”
