Career
In 2002, Rao had her first leading role in Raj Kanwar’s fantasy thriller “Ab Ke Baras” alongside debutante Aarya Babbar. Despite not being a commercial success, her performance earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Following this, she starred alongside Ajay Devgn in the biographical period film “The Legend of Bhagat Singh,” where she played the role of Mannewali (Bhagat’s fiancé).
The turning point in Rao’s career came in May 2003 with the release of the coming-of-age romance film “Ishq Vishk” opposite Shahid Kapoor. The movie was a box office hit and marked a breakthrough for Rao. Her portrayal earned her the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female.
In 2004, Rao appeared in three films. Her first release was the adult comedy “Masti” opposite Vivek Oberoi, which was well-received by audiences. She then had a supporting role in Farah Khan’s “Main Hoon Na” alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Her final release of the year was Milan Luthria’s “Deewar,” where she played a minor role named Radhika.
The following year, Rao starred in the drama “Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!” alongside Shahid Kapoor. Despite negative reviews for the film, Rao’s performance as a school teacher received acclaim. She then took the lead role in the drama “Shikhar,” where she portrayed Madhvi.
In 2006, Rao appeared in the comedy “Pyare Mohan” alongside Vivek Oberoi for the second time. The movie received mixed reviews from critics. Rao’s career soared with her role in Sooraj R. Barjatya’s romance “Vivah” (2006), where she portrayed Poonam opposite Shahid Kapoor. The film was a commercial success and received mixed reviews from critics.
From 2007 to 2012, Rao had a series of minor successes and setbacks. She starred in the Telugu action film “Athidhi” opposite Mahesh Babu, receiving positive reviews for her performance. In 2008, she appeared in “My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves” and “Welcome to Sajjanpur,” with the latter earning her the Stardust Award for Best Actress.
Rao made her debut as a Judge in the television show “Perfect Bride” in 2009 and starred in the film “Victory” alongside Harman Baweja, which failed at the box office. In 2013, Rao appeared in the courtroom comedy-drama “Jolly LLB” and Anil Sharma’s action drama “Singh Saab the Great.” She also starred in Prakash Jha’s political drama “Satyagraha.” Rao made her television acting debut in 2016 with &TV’s “Meri Awaaz Hi Pehchaan Hai” and returned to the big screen in Abhijit Panse’s biopic “Thackeray” in 2019.
In her personal life, Rao married Anmol Sood in 2016 and gave birth to a baby boy in 2020. She launched a book with her husband in 2023 and owns a YouTube channel with him. Throughout her career, Rao has been recognized for her contributions to Bollywood, often praised as the quintessential girl-next-door.
