At just six years old, in 1972, Yagnik began singing for Akashvani (All India Radio) in Calcutta. Recognizing her talent, her mother brought her to Mumbai when she was 10, hoping to establish her as a child singer. Despite suggestions to wait for her voice to mature, her determined mother took her to meet Raj Kapoor through a letter of introduction from his Kolkata distributor.

Impressed by her singing, Raj Kapoor sent her with a letter to the renowned music director Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar. Faced with two options – an immediate start as a dubbing artist or a later breakthrough as a singer – Yagnik’s mother chose the latter for her daughter. Notably, Alka collaborated on the controversial but award-winning song “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” in 1993, receiving her second Filmfare award. She continued to deliver hits like “Din Mein Leti Hai” in 1994 and worked alongside renowned music directors like Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

During the ’90s, Alka, along with Kavita Krishnamurthy and Poornima, dominated playback singing for heroines. She ventured into private albums, including “Tum Yaad Aaye” (1997), “Tum Aaye” (2002), and “Shairana” (2003), showcasing her versatility.

Apart from her film contributions, Alka sang devotional songs and the Hanuman Chalisa. Her song “Chamma Chamma” from “China Gate” even found a place in the soundtrack of the film “Moulin Rouge!”

In 2012, she collaborated with Sonu Nigam on “Shiksha Ka Suraj” for the National Literacy Mission of India.
