Early Life

Alia Bhatt was born on March 15, 1993, in India, into the well-known Bhatt family. Her parents are Indian film director Mahesh Bhatt and British actress Soni Razdan. Mahesh Bhatt is of Gujarati descent, while Soni Razdan has Kashmiri Pandit and British German ancestry. Alia holds British citizenship. She has an elder sister, Shaheen, and two half-siblings, Pooja and Rahul Bhatt. Notably, her paternal cousins include actor Emraan Hashmi and director Mohit Suri, and her uncle is producer Mukesh Bhatt.

Alia attended Jamnabai Narsee School but left her twelfth-grade studies to pursue acting. Despite her family background in the film industry, Alia had a grounded upbringing. She describes her childhood as modest, expressing that she didn’t experience the assumed privileges due to being Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter.

Her relationship with her father wasn’t very close during her upbringing, as her mother, Soni Razdan, took on the role of a single parent. Yearning for more substantial roles after the critical response to “Student of the Year,” Alia found her breakthrough in Imtiaz Ali’s “Highway” (2014), playing a young woman developing Stockholm syndrome after being abducted. Although the film underperformed commercially, Alia’s performance earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Continuing with Dharma Productions, Alia starred in romantic films like “2 States” and “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania” in 2014.

In 2015, she reunited with Vikas Bahl for “Shaandaar,” which didn’t fare well commercially.
