Career

Ali Fazal embarked on his acting journey with minor roles in projects like the romantic comedy film “The Other End of the Line” in 2008 and the American TV miniseries “Bollywood Hero” in 2009. His breakthrough came in 2009 when he was cast in the lead role of “Ek Tho Chance,” an erotic thriller directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza.

Following his theater performance, Fazal landed a part in the blockbuster Bollywood film “3 Idiots” in 2009. He portrayed Joy Lobo, an engineering student, alongside Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor. This role garnered him widespread acclaim and recognition.

In 2011, Fazal starred in “Always Kabhi Kabhi,” a romance film produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. Despite his efforts, the film didn’t fare well at the box office.

Continuing his journey, Fazal appeared in “Fukrey” in 2013, playing Zafar, a struggling musician. The same year, he featured in “Baat Bann Gayi,” a romantic comedy where he portrayed dual roles. In 2014, Fazal took on a supporting role opposite Vidya Balan in “Bobby Jasoos” and received praise for his performance. He also appeared in “Sonali Cable” the same year.

In 2015, Fazal starred in the psychological horror thriller “Khamoshiyan,” showcasing his versatility as an actor. His Hollywood debut came with a special appearance in “Furious 7” in 2015, followed by an Indo-American film titled “For Here Or To Go?” the same year.

In 2016, Fazal was part of “Happy Bhag Jayegi” alongside Abhay Deol and Diana Penty. He also appeared in “Love Affair” and committed to starring in “Tadka” opposite Shriya Saran. 2017 saw Fazal in the sequel “Fukrey Returns” and the British-American film “Victoria & Abdul,” where he portrayed Abdul Karim, Queen Victoria’s confidant.

The spin-off “Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi” and the web series “Mirzapur” marked Fazal’s ventures in 2018. In 2019, Fazal was cast in “Milan Talkies,” “Prassthanam,” and the Netflix film “House Arrest.”

Continuing his role in “Mirzapur” in 2020, Fazal also secured a part in the film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile.” In 2021, Fazal ventured into film production, launching Pushing Buttons Studios with Richa Chadha.
