Career

Nagarjuna started his acting journey as a child artist in the Telugu films “Sudigundalu” (1967) and “Velugu Needalu.” He made his debut as a lead actor in the 1986 film “Vikram,” which was a remake of the Hindi film “Hero.” This marked the beginning of his successful career. Following this, he appeared in movies like “Majnu” and “Sankeertana,” receiving positive feedback for his performances.

In 1988, Nagarjuna starred in the blockbuster “Aakhari Poratam” opposite Sridevi and Suhasini, followed by “Janaki Ramudu,” which was also a hit. The same year, he appeared in the critically acclaimed romantic drama “Geetanjali” directed by Mani Ratnam, which won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Shortly after, he gained immense popularity with “Siva,” directed by Ram Gopal Varma, which became a trendsetter in Telugu cinema and established him as a superstar.

In 1990, Nagarjuna made his Bollywood debut with the Hindi remake of “Siva,” titled “Shiva,” which also became a commercial success. He continued to deliver hits like “Jaitra Yatra,” “Prema Yuddham,” and “Iddaru Iddare.” “Nirnayam,” where he starred alongside Amala, was another successful venture.

Throughout the 1990s, Nagarjuna worked on several box office hits like “Killer,” “Neti Siddhartha,” and “President Gari Pellam.” He earned the nickname “Celluloid Scientist” for his willingness to experiment with different genres and scripts. He also ventured into Hindi cinema with films like “Criminal” and “Hello Brother,” which were well-received by audiences.

In 1996, Nagarjuna produced and starred in “Ninne Pelladata,” which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. The same year, he portrayed the role of Annamacharya in “Annamayya,” earning him critical acclaim and his first Nandi Award for Best Actor.

In the early 2000s, Nagarjuna continued to deliver hits like “Santosham,” “Manmadhudu,” and “Sivamani.” He also ventured into film production with “Satyam” (2003), starring his nephew Sumanth.

In 2010, Nagarjuna appeared in films like “Kedi,” “Ragada,” and “Gaganam.” He signed three consecutive movies in 2011: “Rajanna,” “Damarukam,” and “Shirdi Sai.” While some of his films like “Manam” (2014) and “Soggade Chinni Nayana” (2016) were blockbusters, others like “Greeku Veerudu” and “Bhai” faced mixed responses.

In recent years, Nagarjuna has worked on projects like “Oopiri” (2016), “Om Namo Venkatesaya” (2017), and “Raju Gari Gadhi 2” (2017), receiving varied reviews. However, his film “Officer” (2018) directed by Ram Gopal Varma was a commercial failure.
