Rama Rao began his acting career at the age of seven, appearing in the film “Brahmarshi Vishwamitra” (1991), directed by his grandfather N. T. Rama Rao. He received critical acclaim for his role in the mythological film “Ramayanam” (1997), winning the National Film Award for Best Children’s Film.
In 2001, he made his debut as a lead actor in the romantic drama “Ninnu Choodalani.” Although his initial film “Student No. 1” went into production delay, it later became a successful venture. However, his film “Subbu” faced commercial failure.
Rama Rao gained recognition with his role in “Aadi” (2002), directed by V. V. Vinayak, which emerged as one of the highest-grossing films of the year. Subsequently, he appeared in various films such as “Allari Ramudu” (2002), “Naaga” (2003), and “Simhadri” (2003), the latter becoming the highest-grossing Telugu film at the time.
Transitioning to different genres, Rama Rao starred in “Andhrawala” (2004), “Samba” (2004), “Naa Alludu” (2005), “Narasimhudu” (2005), and “Ashok” (2006). His performance in “Rakhi” (2006) garnered critical acclaim.
From 2007 to 2012, Rama Rao experienced a mix of successes and failures. He collaborated with director S. S. Rajamouli for the third time in “Yamadonga” (2007), which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. He also appeared in “Kantri” (2008) and “Adhurs” (2010), both commercially successful.
In 2011, he returned to romantic films with “Brindavanam,” directed by Vamsi Paidipally. Subsequent projects like “Shakti” and “Oosaravelli” received mixed responses, while “Dammu” (2012) performed averagely at the box office.
From 2013 onwards, Rama Rao’s career witnessed commercial successes with films like “Baadshah” (2013), “Temper” (2015), and “Nannaku Prematho” (2016), the latter earning him his second Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu. “Janatha Garage” (2016) emerged as the highest-grossing Telugu film of the year.
In 2017, he essayed a triple role in “Jai Lava Kusa,” which was praised by critics and performed well at the box office. The following year, his performance in “Aravinda Sametha” (2018) received acclaim, becoming one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of the year.
Rama Rao’s portrayal of Komaram Bheem in S. S. Rajamouli’s “RRR” (2022) garnered widespread acclaim and commercial success.
As of 2024, he is working on several projects, including “Devara” with Koratala Siva, a film with Prashanth Neel under Mythri Movie Makers, and his Hindi cinema debut in “War 2” with Yash Raj Films.
